Falling For Yoga

Have you ever wondered why people love yoga? I can tell you a few reasons.

  1. Yoga is literally for any body. Really anyone can do yoga!

  2. Yoga can help with your balance strength and flexibility.

  3. Yoga keeps you youthful and active throughout your lifetime.

Those are just some reasons why people fall in love with yoga. Yoga is really wonderful because it is a workout as well as a work in. As you work your physical body you are also working your mind and body connection, by matching breath to movement and by really paying attention to what it is your body and mind need. Sometimes that is break in childs pose or an extra long savasana and that is ok!

Yoga is unlike your gym work out or any other group exercise program. In a yoga practice you learn to build strength by using just your body weight and by holding yoga poses for periods of time helping to tone your muscles. Yoga also helps with your flexibility by stretching your body. Your balance improves by doing balancing poses and focusing on your breath and learning about point of focus otherwise known as Drishti. Breathing helps promote focus improve balance digestion and strength. As you can see there is a lot to a yoga practice. Yoga isn’t just holding poses and trying to be more flexible. It is truly a mind body connection that you create while you practice yoga.

So how will yoga prevent falls?

Practicing yoga will help prevent falls by building strength in your entire body. Strong muscles help protect your skeletal system which keeps you upright. Balance will be improved with yoga through practicing all of the poses. You will learn how to find your Drishti or point of focus while practicing yoga which also improved your balance.

Flexibility improves as we know the more flexible something is the harder it is to break. The more you stretch your body the easier it is for you to bend down to pick something up or to tie your shoes.

A few poses that can help improve balance when practiced on a regular basis.

  1. Mountain Pose

  2. Tree Pose

  3. Warrior III

A few chair yoga poses that help with balance

    1. Mountain Pose

    2. Chair Pose ( with or without variations)

    3. Horse /God or Goddess pose incorporating core work.

These are just a few poses I personally find are a good help, but there are really so many more. I will have these poses demonstrated on my youtube channel in a week! Check it out and practice often.

Yoga on its own helps to improve balance which ultimately can prevent falls by helping you become more spatially aware, improves focus, improves all over body strength including core. Strong core protects your back! Yoga also strengthens your feet and legs which helps and our feet are something we forget about strengthening, they are really important and get us place so it is important to remember that they need to be strong too. Breathing is improved as well which also helps us regulate our nervous systems and the calmer our body and mind are the more focused we csn be. When we are in our everyday life all the things here plus more that we can from our yoga practice help keep us balanced and help us to avoid falls and if we do fall we are more likely to be able to get back up from a fall easier.

Falling For Yoga presentation was suppose to be held at Linden Ponds on 9/26/24 but due to extenuating circumstances I made a blog post about it here. Thank you for understanding and sharing in practice with me.
