Falling For Yoga
Have you ever wondered why people love yoga? I can tell you a few reasons.
Yoga is literally for any body. Really anyone can do yoga!
Yoga can help with your balance strength and flexibility.
Yoga keeps you youthful and active throughout your lifetime.
Those are just some reasons why people fall in love with yoga. Yoga is really wonderful because it is a workout as well as a work in. As you work your physical body you are also working your mind and body connection, by matching breath to movement and by really paying attention to what it is your body and mind need. Sometimes that is break in childs pose or an extra long savasana and that is ok!
Yoga is unlike your gym work out or any other group exercise program. In a yoga practice you learn to build strength by using just your body weight and by holding yoga poses for periods of time helping to tone your muscles. Yoga also helps with your flexibility by stretching your body. Your balance improves by doing balancing poses and focusing on your breath and learning about point of focus otherwise known as Drishti. Breathing helps promote focus improve balance digestion and strength. As you can see there is a lot to a yoga practice. Yoga isn’t just holding poses and trying to be more flexible. It is truly a mind body connection that you create while you practice yoga.
So how will yoga prevent falls?
Practicing yoga will help prevent falls by building strength in your entire body. Strong muscles help protect your skeletal system which keeps you upright. Balance will be improved with yoga through practicing all of the poses. You will learn how to find your Drishti or point of focus while practicing yoga which also improved your balance.
Flexibility improves as we know the more flexible something is the harder it is to break. The more you stretch your body the easier it is for you to bend down to pick something up or to tie your shoes.
A few poses that can help improve balance when practiced on a regular basis.
Mountain Pose
Tree Pose
Warrior III
A few chair yoga poses that help with balance
Mountain Pose
Chair Pose ( with or without variations)
Horse /God or Goddess pose incorporating core work.
These are just a few poses I personally find are a good help, but there are really so many more. I will have these poses demonstrated on my youtube channel in a week! Check it out and practice often.
Yoga on its own helps to improve balance which ultimately can prevent falls by helping you become more spatially aware, improves focus, improves all over body strength including core. Strong core protects your back! Yoga also strengthens your feet and legs which helps and our feet are something we forget about strengthening, they are really important and get us place so it is important to remember that they need to be strong too. Breathing is improved as well which also helps us regulate our nervous systems and the calmer our body and mind are the more focused we csn be. When we are in our everyday life all the things here plus more that we can from our yoga practice help keep us balanced and help us to avoid falls and if we do fall we are more likely to be able to get back up from a fall easier.
Falling For Yoga presentation was suppose to be held at Linden Ponds on 9/26/24 but due to extenuating circumstances I made a blog post about it here. Thank you for understanding and sharing in practice with me.

How to create a space in your home to practice yoga
A home yoga practice is a wonderful, It allows you flexibility to practice any time of day that works for you. You are in your own space so that means no leaving early to find a parking spot and rushing into class. You can practice completely solo, on-demand, or through zoom or other platforms, that will give you that sense of a community practice despite not having to leave your home. It also allows you to take your practice on the go when traveling for work or fun. It can sometimes be challenging to create a space that feels relaxing and peaceful. So here is some tips on how to make the perfect place to practice in your home.
First find a corner of a room that is in a quieter area & easily accessible to you when you want to practice. It doesn’t have to be a big space it can be small. All you need is enough room for you to move around a bit and your yoga mat, blocks maybe a blanket and bolster. You may want something to prop your device on if you are practicing online or if you are using music.
I love to practice with natural sunlight or in a dim lit room. If your preference is the same maybe look for a place where you have natural sunlight or an area where its easy to create lighting of your choice. Salt lamps and candles work great to create a relaxing ambiance.
I also love essential oils either available for use during practice or an oil diffuser close by where I can add in my own blends to create relaxing smells. Lavender & Lemon combined always smells really nice.
Soft music that helps you to relax can be great in the background, especially during savasana, just be sure if you are practicing online through Zoom or something similar that your microphone is off so that you don’t disturb others practicing with you.
Find something to cover your eyes in savasana. I use an eye pillow, but you could use a face cloth or a towel. It makes for a more relaxing savasana.
Cautionary notes:
If using candles use battery operated ones, or keep the flames far away from you when practicing and remember to blow them out when done.
Also when using essential oils if you have animals be careful which ones you use as some are toxic to animals.

Don't Be Overwhelmed By Change — Learn How to Embrace It and Succeed- By Sheila Johnson
Change is inevitable, and it can be scary. But the truth is, change is the only way to grow and evolve towards success. Whether you want to start a new career, build a business, or make a lifestyle change, embracing change is key to achieving your goals. And the best way to do that is by cultivating positive habits. Positive habits can support you throughout the change process and help you achieve remarkable results.
In this post from Serene Yoga, we'll explore how to embrace change and set yourself up for success with positive habits.
Recognize and Embrace Change
The first step in embracing change is recognizing that change is necessary. Change is the catalyst for growth and progress in every aspect of life. No matter what your goals are, achieving them will require you to change your habits, mindset, or behavior. So, be open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives.
Manage Your Anxiety with Yoga and Breathwork
Yoga and breathwork have been long recognized as effective tools to help manage anxiety, particularly during periods of change. These practices work together to calm both the body and mind, reducing stress and promoting feelings of relaxation and inner peace. Through focused breathing and gentle stretches, individuals are able to better connect with their bodies and release tension, providing a renewed sense of energy and confidence to face the challenges of change. Serene Yoga offers online classes to help you develop the skills to manage anxiety not just during times of change, but in everyday life.
Begin with Small Steps
Big changes may seem daunting, so it's essential to start with small steps. Any significant change requires a series of smaller steps, and each of these steps is essential to move forward. Start by identifying what habits or behaviors you need to change, and then make a plan to do so. Start with small, achievable goals and celebrate each milestone. Doing so will help you build momentum and increase your confidence.
Exercise Positive Self-Talk
Positive self-talk is an effective way to boost your self-esteemand cultivate a positive mindset towards change. Instead of focusing on what you cannot do, focus on what you can do. For instance, when you feel like you're not good enough, tell yourself that you're capable of achieving anything you put your mind to. Believe in yourself, and positive thoughts will lead to positive results.
Create Supportive Relationships
Having a supportive circle around you can help ease the stress and uncertainty that comes with change. Seek out like-minded people who can encourage you, offer advice, and hold you accountable. Remember, change can be overwhelming, and having others to share your journey with can make all the difference.
Go Back to School for a New Career
There are many reasons to start a new career. Perhaps you are unhappy in your job or you were laid off because of budget cuts. Whatever the reason, take this as a sign to do something new you will love! For instance, if you’ve always loved working with kids and want to make that your new career, look at available bachelor of education programs offered online or in your area. Graduating with this degree will qualify you to work with young children or it can be the first step on your path to earning a teaching credential!
Seek A Mentor
Mentors are invaluable resources to help you navigate through change. They are experienced and can offer insights and guidance to achieve your goals. A mentor can also help you stay committed to your positive habits and hold you accountable. Seek out a mentor who has experience in your area of interest and can offer practical advice.
Be Your Own Boss and Start a Business
If you're feeling stuck in your current job and seeking a change, it might be time to consider becoming your own boss. One popular option is to start an LLC, or limited liability company. If you're in Texas, you might be wondering how to establish yourself as an LLC. Luckily, there are many resources available to guide you through the process, and once you've formed your LLC, you'll have the freedom and control to shape your career path.
Market Yourself with Customized Business Cards
Looking for a way to enhance your content and market yourself without breaking the bank? In today's fast-paced world, it's important to have a professional, eye-catching business card that represents your brand and leaves a lasting impression on potential clients and collaborators. Enhance your content with free business cards through free templates and printing services, you can easily create a high-quality card that will boost your professional image and help you stand out in a crowded market.
Find the Positives in Change
Change can be scary, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and success. Embracing change and cultivating positive habits can help you achieve your goals and live the life you've always wanted. Start with small steps, exercise positive self-talk, create supportive relationships, seek out a mentor, and consider starting your own business. By doing so, you'll set yourself up for success with positive habits that will serve you well throughout your journey. Remember, change is the only way to grow, so embrace it and empower yourself with positive habits.

6 Ways to Cultivate Positivity During a Midlife Crisis by Sheila Johnson
A midlife crisis can seem like an insurmountable barrier. Even if you’ve accomplished plenty, you might be wondering why you feel so dissatisfied. The way you approach a midlife crisis can make all the difference - if you embrace it as an opportunity to change your life for the better, you can come out the other side as a better version of yourself. Whether you’re interested in prioritizing your physical health with yoga classes through Serene Yoga, rekindling your relationships with old friends, or exploring a new career path, these tips can help you along the way.
Reach Out to Old Friends
Midlife can seem lonely, especially if many of your friends have gone down different paths than you. If your social circle has been dwindling recently, it might be time to reach out to friends you’ve lost touch with - you may be surprised by how many people would be excited to reconnect. You can use a search engine to find graduates from your old high school in Boston and the broader surrounding area. All you have to do is input their name, graduation date, and the name of your high school, and you’ll get results with available contact information.
Focus on Your Physical Health
Your mood and your physical health are intrinsically connected. If you’re not taking care of your body, your mental health will suffer too. Therefore, if you’re struggling with a midlife crisis, it’s time to pick up a fitness routine. You may want to join a local yoga studio and try different classes, find a neighborhood running club, or sign up for a gym membership. Try to cook at home as often as possible, and include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Reflect in a Journal
Maybe you feel unsure of what your next steps in life should be. If you’re at a crossroads, reflecting in a journal can help you navigate big decisions. Healthline states that journaling has many benefits, including lowering your stress levels and providing clarity when you feel confused. You can write about anything you want in your journal!
Consider a Career Change
Perhaps you’ve been working at the same job for years or even decades, and lately, you’ve been feeling bored and burnt out. Finding a job that you’re truly passionate about can be reinvigorating! You may want to talk to a career counselor to explore your options. Furthermore, if you’d prefer a more flexible schedule, you could consider freelancing or opening your own small business.
Start Volunteering
Sometimes, a midlife crisis is characterized by a lack of purpose and meaning. Volunteering gives you the chance to contribute to a cause that’s bigger than yourself. To start volunteering, TCK Publishing recommends looking for an organization focused on a cause that you already care about and inquiring about their specific volunteer needs.
Try New Creative Hobbies
Perhaps it’s been a while since you worked on a creative project. Maybe you were an artistic child, but as you grew up and took on more responsibilities, you pushed those creative hobbies to the backburner. Now, it’s time to get in touch with your creative side again! Carve out a little time in your week for art, whether you want to paint, play an instrument, write poetry, or dance.
If you’re dealing with a midlife crisis, you might feel like you’ve failed. But a midlife crisis can actually unlock new doors for you. By trying some of these suggestions, you’ll be ready to catch up with old friends, try yoga or other fitness classes, and find a new sense of purpose in life.

My interpretation of B.K.S. Iyengar quote:“YOGA DOES NOT JUST CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE THINGS, IT TRANSFORMS THE PERSON WHO SEES"
When you practice yoga you start to see yourself and the world from a new perspective. It teaches you to be present, in the moment, to adapt, be open to change, to believe in yourself. It shows you that there is beauty and kindness in the world even in the darkest times. Yoga opens up your heart to your true self and to the world around you. -SF
A Complete Guide to Healthy Habits for Overall Wellness By Sheila Johnson
In a world that's constantly moving and changing, taking care of our health can be a challenge. It's important to focus on establishing healthy habits that promote long-term wellness. These habits offer a wealth of benefits that go far beyond physical health and span multiple spheres of life. From Serene Yoga, here are some ways to establish good habits that contribute to long-term wellness.
Get Adequate Sleep
Getting enough sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being. According to experts, the recommended daily amount of sleep for adults is between seven and nine hours. A good night's rest helps the body repair itself and promotes better mental health. To ensure restful sleep, try establishing a set sleep routine, avoid caffeine close to bedtime, and limit your screen time before sleeping.
Switch to a Balanced Diet
Healthy eating is another essential habit for long-term wellness. Consuming a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean protein sources, whole grains, and healthy fats is essential. Eating a variety of foods ensures you get the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Reducing processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats can lower the risk of chronic disease, promote weight loss, and boost energy levels.
Exercise on a Daily Basis
Incorporating physical activity into your daily routine is one of the best ways to maintain long-term wellness. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of chronic disease, help with weight management, decrease stress, and improve mental health. Adults should aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Find an activity that you enjoy, whether it's running, weightlifting, or swimming, and make it part of your routine.
Start a Regular Yoga Practice
Yoga offers a variety of physical and mental health benefits. Not only does it increase flexibility and strength, but it can also help reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga poses, or asanas, can promote relaxation, calm the mind, and reduce tension. Practicing yoga regularly can lead to improved mental health, better sleep, and reduced inflammation. Get started by becoming a part of the Serene Yoga community today!
Remember to Stay Hydrated
Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining long-term wellness. Water helps transport nutrients throughout the body, flush out toxins, and regulate body temperature. The recommended daily water intake is eight glasses or about two liters. If drinking straight water is challenging, try adding lemon or other natural flavors to make it more appealing.
Don’t Rule Out Going Back to School
Education can provide many benefits beyond just academic learning. Continual learning can help keep the mind active, promote career advancement, and lead to personal growth. Enrolling in a course, attending a seminar or webinar, or learning a new skill can expand your knowledge base and open up new opportunities. If you’re looking to get started in an IT program, for example, this is a good option to consider. Not only is this type of online school flexible in its start times, but your current knowledge may qualify you for credits earned. Take a look around and see which courses and schools are the right fit for you and your ambitions.
Add Mindfulness to Your Day
Mental health is as vital as physical health, and practicing mindfulness is an excellent way to promote both. Mindfulness can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It involves paying attention to thoughts and feelings in the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness practices can be as simple as taking deep breaths during stressful moments or engaging in meditation.
Invest in Healthy, Well-Reviewed Products
Investing in healthy products can help sustain good health in the long run, but it's important to research and understand what you're investing in. Before buying any product, read reviews, and check the product description to understand the ingredients and potential side effects. Look for products that promote overall health, whether it's supplements, vitamins, or organic food items.
Establishing healthy habits promotes long-term wellness and has a wealth of benefits, both physical and mental. Incorporating a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices, along with broadening knowledge and investing in healthy products, are essential components to an overall healthy lifestyle. By adopting these habits, individuals can improve their overall sense of well-being and reduce their risk of chronic illness.
